Even as the Amitabh Bachchan-Tabu starrer Cheeni Kum, directed by ace ad-film-maker Balki (aka Balkrishnan), releases locally to “mixed reactions”, overseas audiences have loved the sardonic sarcasm of Big B’s romantic “ghaas-phoos” character, claims producer Sunil Manchanda.

Even when the Empire theatre in London (with a capacity of 1300 seats) displayed a house-full sign, there were over 500 fans clamouring to get in ‘at any cost’.

“It was a pleasant shock for us. At the end of the screening, there was a standing ovation for Amitabh and Paresh Rawal,” claims Manchanda, who will shortly flag off his next emotional comedy titled Pa starring Amitabh and Abhishek as father and son.

Vishal Bhardwaj prefers his actors actually learn skills and not fake it on screen. So, Vidya Balan is now taking driving lessons for his home production, Ishqiya. The actress who appeared to be driving a car in her last release, Kismat Konnection, didn’t actually have to drive the car. They cheated on the scenes, so it appeared that she was.

No more fear

Says a source close to Vidya, “Vidya has been diligently doing everything from learning the Urdu dialect to attending workshops with Naseeruddin Shah for Vishal’s film which is being directed by his chief assistant director Abhishek Choubey. Now Vidya is learning driving when earlier she was a complete phobe.”

Vishal Bhardwaj is preparing to make a film called “Ishquiyan” in which Vidya Balan will be playing the role of a vamp who tries to attract the attention of two male leads Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi to benefit herself and the two men play uncle and nephew in the movie. Vidya has opted for a different kind of role for herself and she is excited that she will be appearing opposite Naseeruddin Shah in the movie.

Vidya Balan is on a roll. Post the success of Kismat Konnection the actress’ kismet is really shining. She’s just back from a month long trip from New York where she had gone for a fund raiser and she’s all set to shoot for her next set of exciting projects, namely Pa with Amitabh Bachchan and AB junior and Vishal Bharadwaj’s production.

As always, she is choosing her new films with care but one thing she’s sure of is ‘no more fluff roles for her.’ Obviously the actress can afford to pick and choose because she’s the only actress who has had nine big hits out of the total twelve films in her filmography which amounts to 75% success rate.

It can be remembered that fashion designer Aki Narula had a fallout with actor Vidya Balan while working on the film Kismet Konnection . The girl didn’t think he was doing a good job of the clothes and fired him! And while he returned from Toronto, fashion designer Shabina Khan took off from Mumbai to design outfits for Vidya.

However, we got chatting with designer Narula, who is also responsible for the clothes of the cast of Bachna Ae Haseeno – Bipasha Basu, Minnisha Lamba and Ranbir Kapoor. He donned Priyanka Chopra in Don, and the Bunty Aur Babli kurtis that became a fashion rage can be accredited to him.

Vidya Balan has indeed got a winner in her hands in the film ‘Ishkiyaan’ but in spite of her prowess in acting, it is not a cakewalk when it comes to acting in a creative venture of Vishal Bharadwaj.

She now has the additional responsibility of speaking Hindi in a pure U.P dialect as the film’s story is set in a small town in the state.

The film will hit the floors in October and by then the actress has to learn the dialogues in the way the makers want her to speak.
