On 19th January 2009, Sunday morning Mumbai slipped into their running shoes to run for miles and miles in the Standard Chartered Mumbai marathon.

It was also the peace walk against the terror attack on Mumbai on 26/11 many wore the peace and harmony t-shirts and memorized the victims of the blast.

It was  not the first time that Mumbai has witnessed a marathon but this year it was for a cause which shows that Mumbaikers have the all the spirit still alive. The starting point was CST which was also one of the sites gunned down by the terrorist and ended at the same venue after the athletes touched the another site of the 26/11 attacks – the Trident hotel on their way. The participants raced their way past Haji Ali junction, Worli Seaface, Bandra Reclamation as thousands of people cheered them up.

Anil Ambani, Vidya Balan, John Abraham, Tina Ambani, Soha Ali Khan etc joined the race and added the enthusiasm to the marathon. While others like Arjun Rampal became the part of dream run with the handicapped participants and senior citizens. Among the famous ones Vikram Saluja came all prepared for the marathon as he told that he used to jog 6 kilometres twice or thrice a week before the marathon. The actor was well prepared as his next film 42kms is also based on Mumbai marathon and there he is one of the marathon runners.

Marathon reaffirms Mumbai’s resilience

January 19th, 2009

Peace, charity and solidarity — this seemed to be the main agenda of corporate India which participated in large numbers in Mumbai Marathon 2009, held exactly nine weeks after the most dreaded terror attacks in the country.

“This time the marathon is more special. It has united Mumbaikars to bounce back,” said Mr S. Ramadorai, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Tata Consultancy Services.

Agrees Mr S.S. Bajaj, President of Axis Bank, who led close to 150 people from the bank for the event: “Through this marathon, we have shown more solidarity. We should have this more often. And this shows that Mumbai has come back.”

Employees and top honchos of 104 companies such as Pfizer, Essar, Siemens, KPMG, HSBC, Bank of America, DHL, UTI Mutual funds, Accenture, Barclays and L&T, participated in the event.

“Mr Anil Ambani, a regular at the marathon, did the half-marathon of 21 km. There was a lot of colour, cacophony and celebrity-runners for the 7-km Dream Run. People ran for different causes such as the girl child, AIDS awareness, disability organisations, peace and for the welfare of stray dogs.

More participation

According to an organiser, about Rs 10 crore will be raised through people running for different charities last year. And participation was not only by corporates; even employees of top government entities such as Securites and Exchange Board of India, Reserve Bank of India, Mumbai Police and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation supported the cause of a stronger and resilient Mumbai.

This year too saw active participation from the silver generation or the senior citizens, who matched their younger counterparts in both enthusiasm and stamina.

The marathon also had serious participants: Kenya’s Mr Kenneth Mungara won the men’s category, winning a prize money of $2,50,000. Ethiopian Ms Haille Kebebush bagged the first place in the women’s category.

Mr Surinder Singh and Ms Kavit Raut from India won the 21-km marathon in men and women categories.

Running and cheering with the participants were a clutch of celebrities like John Abhram, Vidya Balan, Anil Kumble, Rahul Bose, Luke Kenny, Arjun Rampal and Tina Ambani.

Vedhika preparing for her role in Malai Malai similer to Vidya balan ….

January 19th, 2009

Vedhika has been visiting radio stations and observing several radio jockeys in Mumbai, some of whom are her best friends, as she plays a radio jockey in Malai Malai! Cool! Seldom do heroines land up with such roles in Tamil films. People enjoyed it very much when Vidya Balan, in Lage Raho Munna Bhai, greeted them in a style so typical to most of the RJs all over the world. In fact, her RJ role became as famous as Robin Williams’ in Good Morning Vietnam! It would be interesting to watch what Vedhika would come up with. Surely her role is going to be a head-turner.

Malai Malai, produced by Dr. Mohan for his son-in-law Arun Vijay, has riveted everyone’s attention for four things till now: a wonderful photo shoot, Arun Vijay’s new avatar, Parkour stunts, and the recent Malai Malai calendar launch! The unit used this calendar launch as a means to talk to the press about the film. Unique idea indeed!

January 14th, 2009

Bollywood’s favourite photographer Dabboo Ratnani unveiled his 2009 calendar featuring the who’s who of Bollywood on Monday night in Mumbai and this turned out to be one those those events that makes it to the headlines for all the people who attended it.

“People have known me mostly as a glam face photographer I wanted to break the tradition and take it a notch sexier than what I have done before,” says Photographer, Dabboo Ratnani.

And it seems true because the pretty ladies have sure been bolder than ever before

“I am very proud of myself .I think I am becoming self obsessed right now,” says actor Kangana Ranaut.

“When you have a photographer like Dabboo you know you are in very safe hands,” says actor Amisha Patel.

Well, then it’s no wonder that the stars are ever ready to be clicked by him.

“He always manages to bring out the best in the star which is why you will see every star on this wall,” says Vidya Balan.

And what is it that the photographer wants to do next?

“The generation that was there before me like Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand. I have not shot with those. I guess I should plan a calendar sometime, like a retro calendar,” adds Dabboo Ratnani.

Here’s hoping that 2010 sees the legends captured by Dabboo’s camera.

Lights, camera, pose!

Manisha — who looked every bit the glowing mum-in-waiting — did not let pregnancy slow down her pace and was seen basking in the compliments lavishly showered on hubby. Raveena and Anil Thadani were amongst the early birds. No sooner had Urmila Matondkar walked in with good friend Tusshar Kapoor, than the gorgeous actress was surrounded by shutterbugs in a clicking frenzy.

Amrita Rao was a head-turner looking like a million bucks in a low-back, blue gown and the photographers just couldn’t get enough as they kept her company right till the time she stepped back into her car. Riya Sen stayed on briefly and left in a hurry, while Madhur Bhandarkar and wife Renu were seen enjoying themselves immensly. Madhur greeted ‘his fave actress’ Kangna Ranaut with a big hug, whose fashion sense notched her extra brownie points. Vidya Balan, looking resplendent in an all-white ensemble floored all with her dazzling smile. Love-birds Ameesha Patel and Kanav Puri had eyes only for each other, as did Ayesha Takia and Farhan Azmi, while on the other hand Dino Morea and Lara Dutta came together, but refused to pose with each other.

Prahlad Kakkar, Rohit Roy, Sophie Choudhary, Viveka Babajee, DJ Aqeel and wife Farha Ali Khan and Arav Chowdharry were amongst the others spotted enjoying the do.
